VIP Car Plate Guide

VIP Car Plates in Malaysia

What makes a car plate VIP, what it should cost, and how to buy one directly at a fixed price instead of waiting for a JPJ tender you might not win.

The short answer: A VIP car plate is an ordinary vehicle registration number that happens to be desirable, usually because it is short, repeats, or reads well. You do not have to win a tender to get one. Numbers already in private hands can be bought direct at an agreed price, and the registration is then transferred onto your car through JPJ, normally within one to three working days.

What counts as a VIP car plate

There is no separate legal class called a VIP plate. The registration is issued and transferred exactly like any other. What makes a car plate VIP is simply how much people want it, and in Malaysia that comes down to a handful of things: how few digits it has, whether those digits repeat, what the number sounds like when spoken, and how desirable the letter prefix is.

In practice buyers and dealers sort them into a few working tiers:

TierWhat it usually means
VVIPThe rarest numbers, typically single digits or a very short number on a prized prefix. The smallest group and the most expensive.
GoldenNumbers built around 8 and other favoured digits, such as 88, 888 and 8888, prized for their meaning.
PremiumStrong, clean numbers that read well without being in the top tier.
SpecialNumbers with a personal or pattern appeal, such as a birth year or a mirrored sequence.
Plate KhasSpecial-release series issued by JPJ under their own names.
WildcardYou choose the number and we sort the letters, which is often the cheapest route to a specific digit combination.

What drives the price of a VIP car number plate

Four things, roughly in order of impact:

Across the market this produces a very wide range, from a few hundred ringgit for an ordinary running number up to seven figures for a single-digit VVIP plate. A separate fixed JPJ transfer fee applies on top of whatever the plate itself costs, so there is no percentage commission hidden in the number we quote you.

Buying direct instead of by tender

This is the part most buyers are unclear about, so it is worth being precise. There are two different routes, and they are not alternatives to each other so much as two separate situations.

If the number you want is in a series JPJ has not released yet, tender is the only way. If it already exists on someone's vehicle or in a dealer's hands, buying direct is faster and there is no gamble involved.

A word on safety

Plate buying attracts impersonators, so treat any unfamiliar number with caution. Our only official contacts are 013-300 0055 and 013-300 0070. Never transfer money to any other number claiming to represent PlateMaster, and expect a proper receipt and invoice for every purchase. We have been trading since 2011 from our office next to JPJ Wangsa Maju.

Frequently asked questions

What is a VIP car plate in Malaysia?

A VIP car plate is a vehicle registration number chosen for its appearance or meaning rather than issued in sequence. It usually means a short number, a repeating number such as 88 or 8888, or a sought-after prefix. The plate is registered to your vehicle in the normal way through JPJ; what makes it VIP is desirability, not a different class of registration.

Can I buy a VIP car number plate without tender?

Yes. Numbers already held in private hands can be bought directly at an agreed price, with no bidding and no waiting for a tender window. Tender applies to new series being released by JPJ, where you submit a bid and may not win.

How much does a VIP car plate cost in Malaysia?

From a few hundred ringgit for an ordinary running number up to seven figures for a single-digit VVIP plate. The drivers are length, repetition, meaning and prefix. A separate fixed JPJ transfer fee applies on top of the plate price.

Is buying a VIP car plate legal in Malaysia?

Yes. Transferring a registration number between owners is a recognised JPJ procedure, completed with the standard forms. You receive an official receipt and invoice for the purchase.

How long does it take to get a VIP car plate onto my car?

Typically one to three working days once the paperwork is in order. You attend JPJ once in person for the thumbprint, and PUSPAKOM inspection is required in some cases depending on the vehicle.

Can I buy a VIP number plate online in Malaysia?

You can search availability online and agree the number and price over WhatsApp, but the JPJ transfer itself requires one in-person visit for the thumbprint. We handle the paperwork and tell you exactly when and where to attend.
