What decides a plate's price?
VIP plate prices in Malaysia range from a few hundred ringgit to seven figures. The value comes down to a few things:
- The series, prestige letters carry a premium.
- The digits, single digits and short numbers are rarer and pricier.
- Patterns, repeating numbers like 88, 888 and 8888.
- Lucky numbers, culturally favoured numbers such as 8, 9, 88 and 168.
Because value is personal, many plates are shown as Price on request, message us with the number and we will quote it.
Why some plates say "price on request"
Most of our stock carries a fixed, visible price. A small number do not, and it is worth knowing why rather than assuming something is being hidden.
At the top of the market a plate is worth what one particular buyer will pay for it, because there is no comparable second copy. A four-digit running number has dozens of near-equivalents, so its price is easy to set. A single digit, or a number tied to a company name, has none. Publishing a fixed figure on those would either leave the seller short or park the plate above what anyone will pay, and it would sit unsold for a year either way.
What this means for you in practice: asking costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Message the number and you get a figure back. If it is beyond what you had in mind, say so, and we will tell you what the same shape looks like one tier down.
What a broker actually does
It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that you are paying for two things: access and administration.
- Access. The plate you want is usually already owned by somebody. Finding who holds it, and whether they will part with it, is most of the work. A public search will not show you this.
- Administration. The transfer is paperwork with a government department, and it has to be right. We prepare the forms, arrange the inspection where one is needed, and attend to the submission, so your involvement is one visit.
What a broker cannot do is change what JPJ charges, or make an inspection unnecessary. If anyone tells you they can, that is a warning sign rather than a better deal.
Before you pay anyone, ask these five questions
This applies whether you buy from us or from somebody else. A legitimate seller will answer all five without hesitation.
- Is the number available right now, today? Plates get sold and lists go stale. A seller who cannot confirm current availability is quoting from a list, not from stock.
- What is the total, including the JPJ fee? You want the plate price and the government fee separated and both stated, so nothing appears later.
- Will I get a receipt and an invoice in a business name? If the answer is vague, stop there.
- Who attends JPJ, and when do I have to be present? There should be a clear answer, and it should involve you once.
- What happens if the transfer cannot complete? Ask before paying, not after.
